7 Shocking Reasons Why Soccer Is Not Popular in the USA Compared to Europe

I have spent years covering sports for British and European readers and one question keeps landing in my inbox every single World Cup summer: Why Soccer Is Not Popular in the USA the way it is across Europe. This is a question. The 2026 FIFA World Cup is being played on soil right now. Stadiums from Atlanta to Vancouver are packed.. Yet Soccer is not the main thing people talk about in American sports conversations. The main thing people talk about is Football. I am not here to make guesses. I looked at real attendance figures and real TV ratings and real participation data to explain why Soccer is not popular in the USA. I will share my thoughts about Soccer along the way too. Soccer is a deal in Europe.. Soccer is not as big in the USA. I want to know why Soccer is not popular in the USA. So I did some research, on Soccer.

The Real Story Behind Why Soccer Is Not Popular in the USA

Before we make excuses and talk about myths lets look at the situation. Soccer is really becoming popular in America. A lot of people are playing soccer. About 20.5 million people were playing in 2024.. If we look at kids there are over 4 million young players in more than 10,000 soccer clubs with organizations like US Youth Soccer, US Club Soccer and AYSO.

Soccer is also doing well when it comes to people watching games. For example the MLS had an average of over 22,000 fans at each game at the start of the 2026 season. This makes it one of the sports with the fans in the world.

So this is not a story about a sport that is disappearing. It is a story, about soccer facing a lot of competition and losing some battles for some reasons. Soccer is fighting against a lot of sports and activities and it is losing in some areas because of certain things that are happening.

Why Soccer Is Not Popular in the USA: Youth Sports Have Too Much Competition

American kids do not have one favorite sport to play.

Basketball is popular with 41.9% of kids playing it.

Football, which includes both tackle and flag football comes in second at 26.9%. Soccer is behind with 24.1% of kids playing it according to a survey by the Aspen Institute.

This does not mean soccer is failing. It’s just that the competition is really tough. Sports like baseball, basketball and football have been around for a time. They have local leagues, school teams and college programs that soccer is still trying to build. In fact soccer has become less popular since 2019. It has dropped by 3%. At the time flag football has become much more popular. It has increased by 14%. One reason for this is that some parents are choosing flag football because it is an option.

There are concerns about concussions in football. In my opinion this is the reason why soccer is not popular in the USA.Soccer is not competing against people who do not care about sports. It is competing against three popular sports at the same time: basketball, football and baseball.

These sports have a following and are very hard to compete with. Soccer has a lot of work to do to become as popular as these sports.

For players in the USA and Canada trying to close that gap, learning How to Build Explosive Leg Power for Football at Home 2026 is essential. It’s not just about lifting weights it’s about plyometrics, sprint mechanics, and consistency.

Why Soccer Is Not Popular in the USA: No Instant Gratification for TV Audiences

American sports are all about scoring and drama. Football is an example. They play for a bit then they stop and talk about it then they play some more. Basketball is similar. They score often like every thirty seconds or so. Soccer is different. You have to watch for forty five minutes without a break. You might not even see a goal.

The Super Bowl is really popular. A lot of people watch it. 125.6 million people watched Super Bowl LX in February 2026. That is a lot of people. It was one of the things I watched things on American TV. Soccer games do not get that many viewers. This is not because soccer is bad. It is just that people are used to seeing something all the time. Soccer is a game that keeps going. It can be slow. You have to be patient to watch soccer. Most people do not want to wait for something to happen. They like it when things are fast and exciting. American sports fans like to see a lot of action. They get bored if they do not see something cool happen away. Soccer is just not like that.

Why Soccer Is Not Popular in the USA: The Pro Pipeline Still Lags Behind Legacy Leagues

European people often do not know that American kids who are really good at sports are drawn to sports that pay money when they become professionals. The National Football League, the National Basketball Association and Major League Baseball have been around for a time and have a lot of respect good media deals and people to help the players. Major League Soccer is about thirty years old and even though it is the second most attended soccer league in the world the amount of money players can make is still much less than what players can make in Europes top leagues.

A twelve year old kid who is good at soccer and is thinking about whether to play soccer or football is basically choosing between  a smaller group of soccer players in America and a much older and richer group of soccer players in Europe. This difference in money and respect often quietly pushes the young athletes to choose other sports and this is a big reason why soccer is not popular in the USA, among families who want their kids to become professional athletes.

Despite these challenges, the United States has still produced several world-class players who have succeeded at both the club and international levels. Why Soccer Is Not Popular in the USA: MLS Still Fights for a Share of Attention

Major League Soccer is doing well. It had a lot of people watching, with an average of 22,109 fans per game in the three months of the 2026 season. This is an increase from the previous year. Some games even had more than 72,000 fans, which is really something.

Major League Soccer is getting people to the games. It is not getting as much attention as other sports like the National Football League, the National Basketball Association and Major League Baseball. These sports are always on the radio, television and people like to imagine they are the players, which is called fantasy sports.

Major League Soccer just started playing on July 16 and 17. They did this on purpose because the World Cup was just going on and they wanted to get some of the excitement from that. This was an idea but it also shows that Major League Soccer needs help, from bigger events to get people excited rather than being able to do it on its own.

Why Soccer Is Not Popular in the USA: American Sports Identity Runs Through Other Games

Football, basketball and baseball are more than sports in the US. They are a part of our culture.Thanksgiving is about football.

March is about basketball and filling out those brackets:

  • Summer is about baseball.
  • Soccer does not have a tradition like that yet.
  • It has deep roots in communities with immigrants.
  • It is really popular among families.

In fact 65% of people in Latino families played soccer in 2024.I think this cultural gap is more important than any rule differences. You can’t suddenly change a hundred years of tradition. To be honest I do not think soccer needs to try to be, like football. It just needs to be its thing. It is slowly becoming that. Soccer is finding its way.

Why Soccer Is Not Popular in the USA: Draws and Low Scores Frustrate Casual Fans

A game that ends zero to zero is really cool to people who love soccer and know a lot about it.. To someone from America who does not watch soccer very often it can be really boring. They are used to watching sports where there is always a winner. In sports like football and basketball someone always wins.

Soccer is different. Sometimes the game just. Nobody wins. This can be hard for people to understand if they are used to watching sports. They might think it is boring because nobody scored a lot of points.

I get why people might think that.. I think they should give soccer a chance. Some of the exciting things that happen in soccer happen when the score is really close. Like when one team’s winning by just one point and the other team is trying really hard to catch up. This can be really exciting to watch. It just takes some time to get used to it. Appreciate how cool it is. Soccer is a game that can be really slow and then really exciting all at the time. The last fifteen minutes of a game can be really thrilling, even if the score is one, to zero.

Why Soccer Is Not Popular in the USA: Media Coverage and Scheduling Gaps

Soccer is having a time getting people to watch it even though it is easier to stream than ever. The problem is that people like to watch NFL games on Sundays, NBA games at night and MLB games all summer. Apple TV has a deal with MLS, which means people can watch games without any blackouts in their area. This has really happened. More people are watching MLS games. 62 Percent more people are watching than they were last year. That is a deal.. People are still used to watching football and basketball on ESPN or Fox. They like to flip to those channels. Since the World Cup in 1994 which helped start MLS, the coverage of soccer has gotten a lot better.. Soccer highlights are still not shown as much as football highlights, on sports shows. People like to watch football recaps more than soccer highlights most of the time.

To close this gap, modern players are now turning to structured programs like Powerful Strength Training for Soccer Players at Home 2026: Build Explosive Power Fast, which focuses on functional strength, speed, and real match

Is This Changing? Why Soccer Is Not Popular in the USA, For Now

Here’s my honest opinion: I think we’re watching the gap close in real time. The 2026 FIFA World Cup, hosted across the US, Canada, and Mexico, is projected by US Soccer to help push national participation toward 29 million by the end of the year. MLS attendance and viewership are both climbing faster than they have in years. The answer to Why Soccer Is Not Popular in the USA is already starting to change, and nothing here suggests soccer stays a niche sport forever in America. It just needs another decade of youth pipelines maturing into pro rosters, and another cycle of media deals catching up to genuine fan demand.

FAQ: Why Soccer Is Not Popular in the USA

Is soccer actually unpopular in the USA, or just less popular than in Europe? Soccer is growing fast in America, with over 20 million participants in 2024, but it’s still behind football, basketball, and baseball in national attention and TV ratings.

Why don’t Americans like watching 90 minutes of soccer? American sports culture favors frequent scoring and clear stoppages. Soccer’s continuous, low-scoring format asks for a different kind of patience that many casual viewers haven’t developed yet.

Will the 2026 World Cup change soccer’s popularity in the US? It’s already boosting MLS viewership and youth registration, and US Soccer projects participation could reach 29 million by the end of 2026.

How does MLS attendance compare to European leagues? MLS averaged over 22,000 fans per match in early 2026 and ranks among the best-attended leagues globally by total crowd size, though it still trails Europe’s top leagues in TV revenue and global reach.

Do UK and Canadian fans see soccer differently than Americans? Yes. In the UK, football is the default national sport with generations of tradition behind it. In Canada, soccer participation is strong at the youth level and continues to grow alongside hockey’s dominance.
